Introduction:

From its inception Pakistan is facing inflation at various levels with fluctuations from time to time. According to UN World Food Program (WFP) 20 percent Pakistan’s population is malnourished and nearly 45 percent of children are stunted (USAID Report, April 2020). This shows that poverty has affected Pakistani population adversely. Although Pakistan is an Agro-based country still the national nutrition survey 2018 showed that 36.9 percent of the population faces food insecurity. It is a prevailing problem in Pakistan till date as supported by the data above.

Problem Definition/Statement:

A large chunk of people is deprived of food also at economical cost. Basically, homeless people, travelers and those who can’t afford(needy) can buy chapatti at a very low price at Tandoors. We are adding ‘Naiki ki tokri’ there so that people who are well off and our team members will add chapattis. Needy and those individuals who have large families to feed can buy chapattis on a very reasonable cost from those baskets.

Every individual has right to have access to this necessity i.e. chapatti. It’s our duty to bring in resources for such people so that they can easily feed their families no matter what size. In an ideal case, it’s the responsibility of the state to ensure that all the citizens at least have access to reasonable staple food.

Reason this problem persists:

There can be numerous factors behind this problem. Firstly, addressing this problem and ensuring the provision of food at reasonable cost is not above in government priorities. Secondly, hoarding of wheat can be a reason that the price of chapattis is high for daily wage earners especially. Thirdly, overpopulation has caused this issue too.

Tandoor (Oven)

Solution/Action plan:

To cater this problem, we’ll introduce ‘Naiki ki Tokri’ where the Tandoor manager will add chapattis. We’ll generate revenue for instance by bake sale and other methods according to our capacity to give it to the Tandoor management to ensure they sell chapattis at lower rates than usual. We’ll regularly visit the Tandoor’s to give them the revenue generated and to make sure that their normal functioning. This way people will be able to buy chapattis in the quantities that they require at affordable cost. We’ll buy baskets as a first step. This won’t take much time. Then we’ll personally go and meet the manager of Tandoor and inform him about our initiative. We’re hopeful that they’ll cooperate with us as this won’t bring them any loss. Rather this may attract more customers for being kind towards humanity.

In addition, we’ll use marketing techniques to spread the awareness and ask those who want to donate for this initiative of ours. We’ll make chart papers to stick them outsides Tandoors so that people coming to Tandoor’s while waiting for their order to be prepared can read it. On the chart papers we’ll mention that kindly contribute the amount for some extra chapattis for needy in ‘Naiki ki tokri’ we have placed.

Measuring Impact:

To measure the impact, we can keep a check of number of people benefitted from our initiative. For this purpose, we’ll ask the manager of Tandoor to keep a record for our assistance. Hopefully we’ll be able to serve enough people in the time of two months.
